Overview

Ginsenoside mc1 is a bioactive compound derived from Panax ginseng, a plant traditionally used in East Asian medicine. It has demonstrated antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-apoptotic properties, and exhibits neuroprotective effects in preclinical models of neurodegenerative and cerebrovascular diseases, including ischemic stroke and Alzheimer's disease. The compound appears to act primarily by activating the AMPK/SIRT1 signaling pathway, which improves mitochondrial function, reduces oxidative stress, and suppresses neuroinflammation. The neuroprotective effects of ginsenoside mc1 have been shown to be dependent on this pathway, as inhibition of AMPK reverses its benefits. Ginsenoside mc1 also activates mitochondrial ATP-sensitive potassium channels, contributing to its protection against cerebral ischemia-reperfusion injury. While preclinical evidence is promising, there is no evidence of clinical use in humans.
