Overview

Ginsenoside Rb1 is a major protopanaxadiol-type saponin found in the roots of Panax species (ginseng), especially Panax quinquefolius (American Ginseng). It is a small molecule classified as a triterpene saponin and steroid glycoside. Ginsenoside Rb1 exhibits diverse pharmacological activities including neuroprotective, anti-inflammatory, anti-obesity, antidiabetic, antioxidant, and anti-apoptotic effects. Mechanistically, it acts as an inhibitor of Na+, K+-ATPase activity and modulates multiple cellular pathways such as NF-κB signaling to reduce inflammation; it also regulates glycolipid metabolism to improve insulin sensitivity and glucose tolerance. In neurological contexts, it reduces oxidative stress and apoptosis by upregulating Bcl-2 family proteins and inhibiting caspase activation. Ginsenoside Rb1 has been studied for potential therapeutic roles in diabetes mellitus (as an insulin sensitizer), obesity, neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s disease (by reducing amyloid toxicity), cardiovascular conditions (improving cardiac function post-injury), and other inflammatory or metabolic disorders[1][2][3][4][5][6][8].
