Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Ginsenoside Rb1 + berberine is a combination of two natural small-molecule compounds: ginsenoside Rb1, a principal active saponin from Panax ginseng, and berberine, a protoberberine-type isoquinoline alkaloid from Coptis chinensis. This combination has been studied for synergistic effects in type 2 diabetes mellitus, obesity-related inflammation, and diabetes-associated depression. Mechanistically, the combination enhances insulin sensitivity, improves glucose and lipid metabolism, and exerts broad anti-inflammatory effects, with reported superior efficacy against metabolic dysfunction compared to monotherapy or metformin. The duo acts by comprehensively modulating hepatic metabolism and inhibiting the NF-κB signaling pathway, and may also confer neuroprotective and antidepressant benefits through upregulation of brain-derived neurotrophic factor and modulation of the GDF15/hepcidin pathway.[1][3][4][5]
