Giomer-based bioactive gel is a dental material utilizing Surface Pre-Reacted Glass-ionomer (S-PRG) filler technology, currently being evaluated by researchers at Cairo University for the prevention of white spot lesions (WSLs) in orthodontic patients. The S-PRG fillers within the gel release six beneficial ions: fluoride, strontium, borate, aluminum, silicate, and sodium. These ions work synergistically to promote the remineralization of tooth enamel, inhibit the growth and acid production of cariogenic bacteria such as Streptococcus mutans, and provide a buffering effect against acidic challenges in the oral environment. This technology combines the fluoride-releasing and bioactive properties of glass ionomers with the aesthetic and physical handling characteristics of composite resins.
