Overview

Girentuximab I-124 is a radiolabeled chimeric monoclonal antibody designed for diagnostic imaging in oncology. It consists of the antibody girentuximab labeled with the radioisotope iodine-124 (I-124), enabling positron emission tomography (PET) imaging. The antibody specifically targets carbonic anhydrase IX (CAIX), a protein highly expressed on the surface of clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC) cells and other hypoxic tumor regions[6][7]. By binding to CAIX, girentuximab allows for noninvasive detection and characterization of ccRCC lesions using PET/CT scans[2][7]. The mechanism involves both high-affinity antigen binding and facilitation of immune-mediated cytotoxicity such as antibody-dependent cellular cytotoxicity (ADCC)[6][8]. Girentuximab I-124 is primarily developed as a diagnostic agent to improve preoperative identification and management of renal masses suspected to be ccRCC[5][7].
