Overview

GKA23 is a potent small molecule glucokinase activator, specifically the free alcohol derivative of AZD1656. It acts by activating glucokinase (GK), an enzyme that plays a central role in glucose sensing and regulation in pancreatic beta cells and the liver. By increasing GK activity, GKA23 enhances insulin secretion and promotes glucose uptake, thereby lowering blood glucose levels. Preclinical studies have shown that GKA23 induces insulin secretion even under euglycemic and hypoglycemic conditions[1][3][4]. The drug has been primarily investigated for its potential use in diabetes mellitus.
