Insulin glargine is a long-acting synthetic analog of human insulin used to improve glycemic control in adults and children with type 1 diabetes mellitus and in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus. It works by mimicking the activity of endogenous insulin—promoting glucose uptake from the blood into tissues such as liver, fat cells, and skeletal muscle for storage or energy use. Insulin glargine also inhibits hepatic glucose production and suppresses lipolysis and proteolysis. In people with type 1 diabetes, it must be used alongside short-acting insulins; in type 2 diabetes it may be used alone or with other antidiabetic agents.
