Overview

Glass ionomer is a dental restorative material composed primarily of fluoroaluminosilicate glass powder and polyacrylic acid. It is widely used in dentistry for fillings, luting cements (for crowns and bridges), liners, bases under restorations, and as dental sealants. Glass ionomers are valued for their ability to chemically bond to tooth structure without the need for additional bonding agents and for their sustained release of fluoride ions, which helps prevent secondary caries by promoting remineralization and inhibiting bacterial metabolism. The material is biocompatible with oral tissues and has a coefficient of thermal expansion similar to natural tooth enamel. There are two main types: conventional glass ionomer cements (CGIC) that set via an acid-base reaction, and resin-modified glass ionomers (RMGIC) that also undergo free-radical polymerization for improved strength and handling properties[1][3][5][9]. Glass ionomers are best suited for non-stress-bearing areas due to their relatively low fracture toughness compared to alternatives like amalgam or composite resin[2][6]. They are especially popular in pediatric dentistry because of ease of use and fluoride release.
