Overview

This is a combination of two immunomodulatory drugs, glatiramer acetate and interferon beta-1a, both of which are approved as monotherapies for the treatment of relapsing forms of multiple sclerosis (MS). Glatiramer acetate is a synthetic polypeptide composed of four amino acids (alanine, lysine, glutamate, and tyrosine) that modulates immune processes by shifting T-cell responses from pro-inflammatory to anti-inflammatory phenotypes. Interferon beta-1a is a recombinant form of human interferon beta that exerts its effects by reducing inflammatory cell migration across the blood-brain barrier and modulating cytokine production. The combination has been studied in clinical trials but did not demonstrate significant additional benefit over either agent alone in reducing relapse rates or disability progression in MS patients[3][6]. Both agents act primarily through immunomodulation but via distinct mechanisms.
