The major histocompatibility complex class II (MHC class II) receptor is a membrane-bound glycoprotein complex found primarily on professional antigen-presenting cells (APCs). Its primary function is to present processed peptide antigens derived from extracellular proteins to CD4+ helper T cells, thereby initiating and regulating adaptive immune responses. It is a heterodimer composed of alpha and beta chains and is encoded by the human leukocyte antigen (HLA) gene complex. Mutations affecting expression or function can cause immunodeficiency syndromes such as bare lymphocyte syndrome type II.
