GlcNAc-GlcN

GlcNAc-GlcN is a heterodisaccharide, specifically 4-O-(N-acetyl-β-D-glucosaminyl)-D-glucosamine, which is a product of chitin degradation. It is formed from N,N'-diacetylchitobiose ((GlcNAc)2) through the action of chitin oligosaccharide deacetylase (COD) or a combination of chitinase and COD. In various *Vibrio* bacteria, GlcNAc-GlcN acts as a crucial signaling molecule. It induces the production of chitinolytic enzymes, particularly chitinase, thereby enhancing the bacteria's ability to metabolize chitin. Furthermore, it functions as an effective chemoattractant for COD-producing *Vibrio* species and stimulates polar flagellum rotation.
