Overview

Gleptoferron is a macromolecular complex of beta-ferric oxyhydroxide and dextran glucoheptonic acid used primarily in veterinary medicine for the prevention and treatment of iron deficiency anemia in neonatal pigs. It acts as a highly bioavailable source of iron, which is rapidly absorbed after intramuscular injection. The iron from gleptoferron is taken up by macrophages at the injection site and gradually released into the bloodstream, where it binds to transferrin for transport to tissues involved in hemoglobin synthesis and erythropoiesis. This mechanism supports red blood cell production and prevents anemia during periods of rapid growth[1][2][5][6]. Some sources also mention its use on farms affected by coccidiosis to prevent diarrhea caused by new infections while simultaneously preventing iron deficiency anemia[8]. Developers: Labiana
