gleptoferron + toltrazuril

**Gleptoferron + toltrazuril** is an injectable veterinary combination product designed for neonatal piglets, combining gleptoferron (an iron(III) complex providing 133.4-182 mg iron per ml) for the prevention of iron deficiency anaemia with toltrazuril (30-36.4 mg per ml), a triazinone antiprotozoal agent with coccidiocidal activity against all intracellular stages (merogony, gamogony, sporogony) of *Cystoisospora suis*. Administered as a single intramuscular injection (0.55-1.5 ml per piglet, delivering 20 mg toltrazuril/kg and 100-200 mg iron/kg) between 24-96 hours after birth behind the ear, it concurrently prevents clinical signs of coccidiosis (diarrhea) on farms with confirmed history and ensures iron supplementation critical for growth, as piglets have low iron reserves from colostrum/milk. Developed by Bayer (Baycox Iron) and Ceva Santé Animale (Forceris), it received EMA marketing authorization in 2019 as the first such approved injectable combo in Europe, also registered in Australia; pharmacokinetics show toltrazuril peaking at 4-6 mg/L within 5 days (half-life 3-4 days, metabolized to active sulfoxide/sulfone) and iron rapidly absorbed into lymphatics with prolonged release.
