The **glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor variant** was an unnamed, biosynthetically engineered recombinant GDNF biologic developed by Eli Lilly in a 2011 early-stage collaboration with Medtronic for Parkinson's disease. The variant was designed to improve distribution within targeted brain regions relative to prior GDNF approaches. It was intended for continuous, targeted intracerebral administration using Medtronic's implantable infusion system, comprising a drug pump and specialized catheter, to bypass the blood-brain barrier. GDNF signaling is mediated through the GFRα1 co-receptor and RET receptor tyrosine kinase, supporting neuronal survival and potentially protecting dopaminergic neurons affected in Parkinson's disease.
