Drug intelligence / Profile preview
GLIBOMET is a fixed-dose combination oral anti-diabetic medication containing glibenclamide (a sulfonylurea) and metformin (a biguanide). It is indicated for the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus in patients whose glycemia is not adequately controlled by diet, exercise, and monotherapy. Glibenclamide stimulates insulin secretion by binding to the sulfonylurea receptor on pancreatic beta cells, while metformin reduces hepatic glucose production, decreases intestinal absorption of glucose, and improves insulin sensitivity by increasing peripheral glucose uptake and utilization. This dual mechanism provides complementary glycemic control.
