Overview
GlicoPro is a tear substitute and ocular surface therapy derived from the mucus of the snail *Helix aspersa*. It is composed of various mucopolysaccharides, including glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) and sulfated glycosaminoglycans (sGAGs). The formulation is designed to improve tear film stability by fortifying its mucinous layer, reducing ocular surface friction, and providing regenerative, anti-inflammatory, and analgesic effects. Its thiomeric sGAGs enable covalent bonding with mucin’s cysteine residues on the corneal surface for prolonged adherence. Clinical studies have shown that 10% GlicoPro significantly improves symptoms in patients with severe dry eye disease (DED), enhances tear film stability, reduces ocular pain, and normalizes inflammatory cytokines such as IL-1, IL-6, IL-8 as well as biomarkers like MMP-9 and MUC-4[6][8]. It has also been studied in combination with hydroxypropyl-methylcellulose for enhanced efficacy in DED treatment[8].
