Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Glimecare-M1 Forte is a fixed-dose combination pharmaceutical product containing two oral antihyperglycemic agents: glimepiride (1 mg) and metformin (1000 mg). Developed and manufactured by Apgar Pharmaceuticals, it is indicated for the management of type 2 diabetes mellitus. Glimepiride is a third-generation sulfonylurea that stimulates insulin secretion from pancreatic beta cells by binding to and blocking ATP-sensitive potassium channels (specifically the SUR1 subunit). Metformin is a biguanide that improves glycemic control by decreasing hepatic glucose production, reducing intestinal glucose absorption, and enhancing insulin sensitivity through the activation of AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK). The 'Forte' designation typically indicates a higher strength of the metformin component (1000 mg) compared to the standard version (500 mg), often formulated for sustained release to improve patient compliance and gastrointestinal tolerability.
