Overview

Glimepiride is a second-generation sulfonylurea antidiabetic medication used primarily for the management of type 2 diabetes. It acts as an insulin secretagogue, stimulating pancreatic beta cells to release more insulin and increasing the activity of intracellular insulin receptors. Glimepiride is taken orally, typically once daily with breakfast or the first main meal, and is often prescribed alongside lifestyle modifications such as diet and exercise. It is not effective in patients with type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis because it requires some endogenous insulin production to work. Common side effects include headache, nausea, dizziness, and hypoglycemia; serious adverse effects are rare but can include blood disorders. Glimepiride was patented in 1979 and approved for medical use in 1995; it is now widely available as a generic drug[1][2][5].
