Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Glimepiride + metformin is a fixed-dose combination of two oral antidiabetic agents used in the management of type 2 diabetes mellitus, particularly in patients whose blood sugar levels are not adequately controlled by diet, exercise, or monotherapy. Glimepiride is a sulfonylurea that stimulates insulin secretion from pancreatic beta cells, thereby increasing insulin availability. Metformin is a biguanide that reduces hepatic glucose production, delays intestinal glucose absorption, and increases peripheral insulin sensitivity. Together, this combination addresses both impaired insulin secretion and insulin resistance to improve glycemic control[5][8][2]. The drug is widely prescribed globally and available in multiple strengths under various brand names.
