Overview

Glipizide is a second-generation sulfonylurea oral hypoglycemic agent used to treat type 2 diabetes mellitus. It works by stimulating pancreatic beta cells to release insulin and increasing tissue sensitivity to insulin, thereby lowering blood glucose levels. It is indicated for use in adults with type 2 diabetes, typically as an adjunct to diet and exercise, and may be used in combination with other antidiabetic agents. The drug is not effective for type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis. Compared to first-generation sulfonylureas, glipizide has a more rapid onset of action and shorter half-life, reducing the risk of prolonged hypoglycemia[1][2][3][4][5][7].
