Overview

Glipizide + glargine is a combination therapy consisting of two distinct antidiabetic agents used together for the management of type 2 diabetes mellitus. Glipizide is an oral sulfonylurea that stimulates insulin secretion from pancreatic beta cells, thereby lowering blood glucose levels. Insulin glargine is a long-acting recombinant human insulin analog administered by subcutaneous injection to provide basal insulin coverage and maintain stable blood glucose throughout the day and night. The combination aims to improve glycemic control in patients whose response to either agent alone is inadequate, with evidence showing improved fasting plasma glucose, reduced glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c), and lower total daily insulin requirements compared to insulin monotherapy[4][5][6]. This regimen carries an increased risk of hypoglycemia due to additive effects on lowering blood sugar[1][5].
