Overview

GliSODin is an oral nutraceutical supplement composed of a melon-derived superoxide dismutase (SOD) enzyme combined with gliadin, a wheat protein. The gliadin component serves as a protective carrier, preventing the degradation of SOD by gastric acid and allowing its absorption in the small intestine. As a potent antioxidant, SOD works to neutralize reactive oxygen species and restore antioxidant balance, which is hypothesized to play a role in the pathophysiology of melasma. The Centre Hospitalier Universitaire de Nice conducted a randomized, placebo-controlled trial (NCT03878433) evaluating GliSODin (500 mg/day) in combination with sunscreen for the treatment of melasma severity. The study aimed to leverage SOD's ability to mitigate oxidative stress-induced melanogenesis.
