Overview
Glitaray is a branded generic formulation of glimepiride, a third-generation sulfonylurea anti-diabetic medication marketed by Lloyd Healthcare in India. It is indicated for the management of type 2 diabetes mellitus as an adjunct to diet and exercise. Glimepiride acts as an insulin secretagogue by binding to the sulfonylurea receptor 1 (SUR1) subunit of ATP-sensitive potassium (KATP) channels on the pancreatic beta-cell membrane. This binding leads to the closure of the KATP channels, resulting in cell depolarization, the opening of voltage-gated calcium channels, and an influx of calcium that triggers insulin release. Glitaray is available in multiple strengths (1mg, 2mg, 3mg, and 4mg) and is also available in fixed-dose combinations with metformin under the names Glitaray MP and Glitaray M Forte.
