Overview

Glossogyne tenuifolia is a perennial herb native to Taiwan and widely used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), where it is known as hsiang-ju or xiang-ru. Traditionally, it has been employed as an antipyretic (fever-reducing), anti-inflammatory, and hepatoprotective agent. Modern pharmacological studies have demonstrated that extracts of Glossogyne tenuifolia possess significant antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antiviral (notably against hepatitis B virus), hypoglycemic, and vascular protective activities. The main bioactive constituents include luteolin-7-glucoside and luteolin. Mechanistically, the herb inhibits inflammatory mediator release by suppressing cytokines such as TNF-alpha, IL-6, and IFN-gamma; scavenges reactive oxygen species; inhibits LDL oxidation; blocks NF-kappaB and MAPK signaling pathways; reduces proliferation/migration of vascular smooth muscle cells via downregulation of MMPs; inhibits α-glucosidase activity relevant to diabetes management; and demonstrates hepatoprotective effects[1][3][5][6][7]. Its multi-targeted actions are believed to underlie its traditional uses for fever reduction, liver protection, metabolic syndrome support (including type 2 diabetes), cardiovascular health (antiatherosclerotic effects), and inflammation control.
