Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Gloulea 500 (also marketed as Glourea 500) is an oral generic formulation of hydroxycarbamide (hydroxyurea) developed and manufactured by Globela Pharma. It is approved for the treatment of various oncology indications, including chronic myeloid leukemia (CML), cervical cancer, and other solid tumors in combination with radiotherapy. It is also indicated for the management of sickle cell anemia to reduce the frequency of painful crises and the need for blood transfusions. Hydroxycarbamide acts as an antimetabolite that selectively inhibits ribonucleoside-diphosphate reductase (ribonucleotide reductase), an enzyme essential for DNA synthesis. This inhibition halts DNA replication and repair, causing cell cycle arrest in the G1/S phase and leading to the death of rapidly dividing cancer cells. In sickle cell disease, it also increases the production of fetal hemoglobin (HbF), which prevents red blood cells from sickling.
