This is a combination of two agents with opposing actions at the glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1) receptor. Glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1) is an incretin hormone that stimulates insulin secretion, suppresses glucagon release, slows gastric emptying, and reduces appetite. Exendin(9–39) is a truncated form of the exendin family and acts as a specific competitive antagonist at the GLP-1 receptor in both humans and animals. When administered together, this combination allows for experimental modulation of endogenous or pharmacologic GLP-1 signaling by blocking its effects with exendin(9–39). This approach has been used in research to dissect the physiological roles of endogenous or therapeutic GLP‑1 activity on glucose metabolism, insulin secretion, and related metabolic endpoints[1][2][4][5].
