GLS-5700 is a synthetic DNA plasmid vaccine developed to prevent Zika virus infection. Co-developed by Inovio Pharmaceuticals and GeneOne Life Science, the vaccine encodes the premembrane-membrane (prM) and envelope (E) proteins of the Zika virus. It is administered via intradermal injection followed by electroporation using Inovio's proprietary CELLECTRA device, which facilitates the entry of the DNA plasmids into host cells to induce both humoral and cellular immune responses. GLS-5700 was the first Zika vaccine to enter human clinical trials, advancing rapidly from preclinical development to Phase 1 studies in response to the 2015-2016 Zika public health emergency.
