Overview

Glucagon + exendin9-39 is a research-stage combination intervention consisting of the peptide hormone glucagon and the GLP-1 receptor (GLP-1R) antagonist exendin9-39. This combination is primarily used as a pharmacological tool in mechanistic clinical studies to investigate the physiological effects of glucagon on renal hemodynamics. Glucagon is known to influence renal blood flow and electrolyte balance, but because it can also cross-activate the GLP-1 receptor, exendin9-39 is co-administered to selectively block GLP-1R signaling. This allows researchers to isolate the effects mediated specifically through the glucagon receptor. The combination has been studied by Bispebjerg Hospital in healthy volunteers to map regional blood flow in the kidney cortex and medulla using MRI.
