Glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) is a naturally occurring incretin hormone produced by intestinal L-cells and certain neurons in response to food intake. It plays a key role in glucose metabolism by enhancing insulin secretion, suppressing glucagon release, slowing gastric emptying, and reducing appetite. These effects help lower blood sugar levels and promote weight loss. Because endogenous GLP-1 is rapidly degraded in the body, pharmaceutical agents known as GLP-1 receptor agonists have been developed to mimic its action for the treatment of type 2 diabetes and obesity[3][5][6]. These drugs activate the GLP-1 receptor to stimulate insulin production, inhibit glucagon secretion, slow gastric emptying, and reduce food intake[4][5].
