Overview

Glucagon-like peptide 1(7–36)-amide is a naturally occurring, biologically active form of the incretin hormone GLP‑1, produced by posttranslational processing of proglucagon in intestinal L-cells and certain neurons. It acts as a potent agonist at the glucagon-like peptide 1 receptor, stimulating glucose-dependent insulin secretion and suppressing glucagon release. This dual action lowers blood glucose levels and contributes to its role as an incretin hormone in the enteroinsular axis. Additionally, it slows gastric emptying, promotes satiety, reduces food intake, and inhibits gastric acid secretion. Due to rapid degradation by dipeptidyl peptidase‑4 and other enzymes, its half-life is very short; thus native GLP‑1(7–36)-amide itself is not used therapeutically but serves as the basis for several synthetic analogs used in diabetes and obesity treatment[4][5][6][7][8].
