Glucagon-like peptide-1 (7-36) amide is the primary biologically active form of the endogenous incretin hormone GLP-1. It is a 30-amino acid peptide produced by intestinal L cells in response to nutrient ingestion. The peptide acts as a potent agonist of the glucagon-like peptide 1 receptor (GLP-1R), stimulating glucose-dependent insulin secretion, suppressing glucagon release, slowing gastric emptying, and promoting satiety. Due to its rapid degradation by dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4), it has a very short half-life in vivo. In clinical research, such as studies conducted by Aarhus University, it is often administered via continuous infusion to investigate its metabolic effects and potential for treating type 2 diabetes mellitus.
