Overview

This drug is a combination of two incretin hormones, glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1) and glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP). Both are gut-derived peptides that play key roles in the regulation of glucose metabolism. GLP-1 stimulates insulin secretion, inhibits glucagon release from pancreatic alpha cells, slows gastric emptying, and increases satiety. GIP also stimulates insulin secretion in a glucose-dependent manner and can modulate lipid metabolism; its effectiveness is reduced in type 2 diabetes but may be restored with improved glycemic control. The combination aims to leverage the complementary actions of both hormones for enhanced glycemic control and weight loss. Dual agonists targeting both GLP-1 and GIP receptors have shown significant efficacy in lowering blood sugar levels, improving insulin sensitivity, reducing body weight, and favorably modifying lipid profiles. This approach represents an advanced therapeutic strategy for managing type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and obesity[1][2][3][5].
