Glucagon-like peptide-2 (GLP-2) is a 33-amino acid proglucagon-derived peptide hormone primarily secreted by the L-cells of the distal ileum and colon in response to nutrient ingestion. In the context of research conducted by the University Health Network, Toronto, GLP-2 is being investigated for its role in the regulation of intestinal and hepatic lipoprotein production. While GLP-2 is well-known for its trophic effects on the intestinal mucosa and its ability to enhance nutrient absorption, clinical studies have demonstrated that it also acutely stimulates the secretion of triglyceride-rich lipoproteins (chylomicrons) from the intestine. The specific trial mentioned evaluates the effect of a single subcutaneous dose of GLP-2 on the production and clearance of lipoproteins in healthy volunteers to better understand the mechanisms underlying postprandial dyslipidemia.
