Overview

Glucaric acid is a naturally occurring compound found in the human body and in various fruits and vegetables such as oranges, apples, broccoli, and cabbage. It is a derivative of glucose metabolism and belongs to the class of glucuronic acid derivatives. Glucaric acid plays an important role in detoxification processes within the liver by supporting phase II conjugation reactions (glucuronidation), which help eliminate toxins and carcinogens from the body. Its mechanism involves inhibiting beta-glucuronidase—an enzyme that can reverse detoxification by deconjugating toxins—thereby promoting excretion of harmful substances. Glucaric acid exhibits hepatoprotective (liver-protecting), anti-inflammatory, cholesterol-lowering, antioxidant, and anticancer properties. It has been studied for its potential to reduce cancer risk (especially hormone-dependent cancers like breast or prostate cancer) by lowering estrogen levels through enhanced elimination[1][4][5][6]. While available as dietary supplements (often as calcium D-glucarate), there is not enough clinical evidence to support its use for disease prevention or treatment.
