Overview

GlucaTex is a brand name for glucagon, a recombinant hormone used as a critical emergency medication to treat severe hypoglycemia (dangerously low blood sugar) in patients with diabetes. It is also utilized in clinical settings to temporarily inhibit gastrointestinal motility during radiologic examinations. Glucagon is a 29-amino acid polypeptide produced via recombinant DNA technology that mimics the endogenous hormone secreted by the alpha cells of the pancreas. Its primary mechanism involves acting as an agonist at the glucagon receptor, predominantly in the liver, which triggers the activation of adenylate cyclase and increases intracellular cAMP levels. This signaling cascade promotes glycogenolysis (the breakdown of glycogen into glucose) and gluconeogenesis, leading to a rapid elevation of blood glucose levels. GlucaTex is typically supplied as a lyophilized powder in a kit for reconstitution and administration via intramuscular, subcutaneous, or intravenous injection.
