Overview

This is a combination therapy using glucocorticoids (typically prednisolone) alongside radioactive iodine (I-131) treatment. The radioactive iodine component works by being absorbed by thyroid cells, where it delivers radiation that destroys thyroid tissue, including cancerous cells. Glucocorticoids are administered prophylactically to prevent or reduce the risk of eye complications (Graves' orbitopathy) that can occur after radioactive iodine therapy. This combination is primarily used in patients with Graves' disease who have or are at risk of developing eye problems.
