Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Glucofree is a pharmaceutical product developed by IASIS PHARMA containing metformin hydrochloride as its active ingredient. It belongs to the biguanide class of oral hypoglycemic agents and is primarily indicated for the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus, particularly in overweight or obese patients when lifestyle modifications such as diet and exercise are insufficient to restore glycemic control. Metformin exerts its anti-hyperglycemic effects by inhibiting hepatic glucose production (gluconeogenesis), decreasing intestinal absorption of glucose, and improving insulin sensitivity by increasing peripheral glucose uptake and utilization. Notably, Glucofree does not stimulate insulin secretion, thereby minimizing the risk of hypoglycemia. It is approved for use as monotherapy or in combination with other oral anti-diabetic agents or insulin in adults, and can also be used in children and adolescents over 10 years of age.
