Overview

Gluconolactone is a naturally occurring polyhydroxy acid (PHA) that serves as a next-generation chemical exfoliant and humectant in dermatological applications. Chemically, it is the delta-lactone of gluconic acid. Unlike traditional alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs) like glycolic acid, gluconolactone possesses a larger molecular structure, which limits its depth of skin penetration, thereby providing a gentler exfoliation profile with significantly reduced potential for irritation or sensory discomfort. Its mechanism of action involves the acidification of the stratum corneum and the subsequent weakening of corneodesmosomal attachments, promoting the shedding of dead keratinocytes. Additionally, gluconolactone functions as a humectant by attracting moisture to the skin and acts as a chelating agent capable of neutralizing metal ions and scavenging free radicals, which contributes to its antioxidant and photoprotective properties. It is widely utilized in the treatment of acne vulgaris, rosacea, and photoaging, and is also employed in the food industry as a sequestrant and acidifier (E575).
