Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Glucosamine is an amino sugar and a prominent precursor in the biochemical synthesis of glycosylated proteins and lipids, specifically glycosaminoglycans and proteoglycans found in articular cartilage. As a therapeutic agent, particularly in the form of glucosamine sulfate (e.g., Glukosamin Pharma Nord), it is classified as a symptomatic slow-acting agent for osteoarthritis (SYSADOA). It is used to alleviate symptoms of mild to moderate osteoarthritis, including pain relief and improvement of joint mobility. The drug is reported to possess anti-inflammatory, antioxidative, and anti-catabolic properties, which help maintain joint tissue integrity. It has been specifically evaluated in Phase 4 clinical trials for the treatment of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) osteoarthritis at an oral dose of 1,200 mg per day.
