Overview

This is a combination dietary supplement containing glucosamine, chondroitin sulfate, and calcium. Glucosamine is an amino sugar that serves as a building block for cartilage and other connective tissues. Chondroitin sulfate is a glycosaminoglycan found in cartilage that helps retain water and maintain elasticity. Calcium is an essential mineral important for bone health. The combination of glucosamine and chondroitin has been widely used to support joint health and manage symptoms of osteoarthritis by potentially reducing pain, inflammation, and slowing cartilage breakdown[1][4][5][6]. Calcium is included to support bone strength but does not directly affect cartilage or joint function. Mechanistically: - Glucosamine may stimulate the production of proteoglycans (key components of cartilage) and inhibit enzymes that degrade cartilage. - Chondroitin sulfate may inhibit inflammatory mediators (such as nitric oxide synthase, COX-2), reduce synovitis (joint lining inflammation), promote synthesis of hyaluronate in synovial cells (improving joint lubrication), increase type II collagen/proteoglycan synthesis[7], modulate MAP kinase pathways involved in inflammation[7], protect chondrocytes from damage[5], slow down the breakdown of articular cartilage[8]. - Calcium supports bone mineralization but does not have direct effects on articular cartilage. The efficacy evidence for this combination in osteoarthritis remains mixed; some studies show modest benefit while others do not find significant improvement over placebo or standard treatments like NSAIDs[5][6]. This product is marketed as a nutraceutical/dietary supplement rather than an FDA-approved pharmaceutical drug.
