Overview

Artrox is a pharmaceutical-grade glucosamine hydrochloride product, originally manufactured by Pfizer and approved as a drug in Sweden in 2002. It is primarily indicated for the relief of symptoms in mild to moderate osteoarthritis, such as joint pain and stiffness. Mechanistically, glucosamine serves as a precursor in the biosynthesis of glycosaminoglycans and stimulates the production of proteoglycans by chondrocytes, while also increasing sulfate uptake by articular cartilage to support structural integrity. Beyond its primary use in joint health, Artrox was investigated in the Glucosamine and Statin Lipid-lowering Interaction Study to determine if it interfered with the LDL-cholesterol lowering effects of statins (simvastatin or atorvastatin) in patients with hyperlipidemia; the study concluded that Artrox did not significantly alter lipid profiles.
