Glucosamine sulphate is a naturally occurring amino sugar found in human cartilage and is commonly used as an oral dietary supplement for the management of osteoarthritis. It is believed to support joint health by serving as a building block for tendons, ligaments, cartilage, and synovial fluid. The primary mechanism of action involves modulating inflammation in chondrocytes (cartilage cells), possibly through inhibition of the Nuclear factor kappa-light-chain-enhancer of activated B cells (NF-κB) pathway and reduction of Interleukin 1 beta pathway-mediated inflammatory responses[6]. Glucosamine sulphate may help reduce pain and improve function in people with osteoarthritis; however, clinical trial results are mixed regarding its efficacy[1][4][5]. It is typically derived from shellfish shells or produced synthetically. Most evidence supports its use specifically for knee osteoarthritis.
