**Glucose** is the naturally occurring D-enantiomer of glucose, commonly termed **dextrose** in pharmaceutical products. It is a monosaccharide carbohydrate used medicinally to promptly raise blood glucose in acute hypoglycemia and, in intravenous solutions, to supply carbohydrate calories and water or as part of parenteral nutrition. It acts as a metabolic substrate rather than through a discrete receptor-mediated pharmacologic target. U.S. dextrose injection labels describe approved use for treatment of hypoglycemia and as a source of calories in patients requiring intravenous nutritional support.
