This research intervention, developed by the University of Aarhus, involves the intravenous infusion of glucose and insulin during hemodialysis sessions for non-diabetic patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD). The protocol aims to counteract the catabolic effects of hemodialysis by maintaining hyperinsulinemia, which in turn suppresses the hemodialysis-induced decrease in serum bioactive insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I) and reduces inflammatory markers. By preserving IGF-I bioactivity and modulating insulin-like growth factor binding protein-1 (IGFBP-1), the treatment seeks to improve the anabolic state of patients undergoing maintenance hemodialysis.
