Glucose + icodextrin (often referred to as a bimodal solution) is an experimental peritoneal dialysis (PD) fluid combination being evaluated for the treatment of end-stage renal disease (ESRD). Developed by researchers at the London Health Sciences Centre and Lawson Health Research Institute, the solution combines the rapid crystalloid osmotic effect of glucose with the sustained colloid osmotic effect of icodextrin. This dual-action approach is specifically intended for the long dwell period in automated peritoneal dialysis (APD) to improve 24-hour ultrafiltration efficiency and solute clearance. By optimizing fluid removal, the bimodal solution aims to provide better volume control for dialysis patients while potentially minimizing the long-term membrane damage associated with high-concentration glucose-only solutions.
