UNIDEX-50 is a sterile, hypertonic 50% glucose (dextrose) intravenous infusion manufactured by Unique Pharmaceuticals. It is indicated for fluid replacement without significant electrolyte deficit and for the rapid treatment of severe hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) or hypoglycemic coma. As a concentrated source of carbohydrates, it provides immediate calories and water for hydration, helps reduce the loss of body protein and nitrogen, and promotes glycogen deposition in the liver. Additionally, hypertonic glucose infusions can be used to treat cerebral edema, shock, circulatory collapse, and to correct hyperkalemia when administered in combination with insulin.
