Glucose containing oral rehydration solution is an isotonic fluid preparation containing water, glucose, and electrolytes, principally sodium chloride and sometimes sodium bicarbonate or citrate. Its mechanism of action takes advantage of the sodium-glucose co-transport in the intestines, where glucose facilitates optimal sodium and water absorption from the gut into the systemic circulation. This solution is primarily indicated for treating and preventing dehydration due to diarrheal fluid losses, high output stoma, enterocutaneous fistula, short bowel syndrome, or intestinal failure. It is used to restore and maintain fluid and electrolyte balance and can be formulated at home or provided in commercial powder or premixed liquid forms. The World Health Organization’s recommended formula includes sodium chloride, sodium citrate (or bicarbonate), potassium chloride, and glucose, but glucose-containing ORS formulations may exclude potassium for specific clinical indications[1][3][9].
