Overview

Glucose oxidase + glucose is a combination of the enzyme glucose oxidase and its substrate, glucose. Glucose oxidase catalyzes the oxidation of β-D-glucose to D-glucono-δ-lactone, producing hydrogen peroxide as a byproduct. This reaction has several biomedical applications: - In wound healing, especially for diabetic wounds, the combination modulates hyperglycemic microenvironments by consuming excess glucose and generating gluconic acid (which lowers local pH) and hydrogen peroxide (which provides antibacterial effects)[1][2]. - In cancer therapy, this combination can induce "starvation therapy" by depleting local glucose essential for tumor cell survival while also generating cytotoxic reactive oxygen species[1][6]. - It is also used in biosensors for diagnostic purposes (e.g., blood glucose monitoring), where the enzymatic reaction allows quantification of free glucose via detection of generated hydrogen peroxide[5]. A notable clinical application includes a nasal spray device that mixes these components at administration to prevent or treat upper respiratory tract infections such as the common cold[5].
