The approach utilizes dynamic glucose-enhanced (DGE) MRI and chemical exchange saturation transfer (glucoCEST) technology to visualize the uptake of glucose in brain tissues. By creating a temporary state of hyperglycemia through intravenous infusion of a 50% glucose solution, clinicians can assess blood-brain barrier permeability and metabolic activity, which are often altered in malignant brain tumors such as gliomas. This technique is being investigated as a safer and potentially more sensitive alternative to traditional gadolinium-based contrast agents, particularly for patients with contraindications to metal-based dyes, such as those with renal impairment.
