Glucuronolactone is a naturally occurring metabolite formed from the metabolism of glucose in the liver. It serves as an important structural component of nearly all connective tissues and is a precursor to glucuronic acid. In clinical medicine, it is primarily utilized as a hepatoprotective and detoxifying agent. It works by conjugating with various toxins, drugs, and metabolic waste products in the liver to form water-soluble glucuronides, which are then excreted in the urine. It is frequently used in the treatment of acute and chronic hepatitis, cirrhosis, and food or drug poisoning. Additionally, it is a well-known ingredient in energy drinks, where it is claimed to improve cognitive performance and detoxification, although its therapeutic use in liver disease remains its primary pharmaceutical application.
